As we live through the realities of extreme climate, a couple of reality checks are getting clearer than ever:
- Despite the heartful intents, the climate action movement at large failed to become mainstream. IMHO, at its core, it’s a failure to communicate with PEOPLE and listen to their needs.
- The cost of inaction is exponentially rising, impacting everyone, everywhere, all at once. We can’t disconnect the rapidly changing geopolitical and socioeconomical contexts from our planet and our intertwined wellbeing.
Our history with this planet has been cyclical
To report the realities of extreme climate, the headlines are filled with “record-breaking charts” which are driven by a “Guinness Record” mindset. However, little is being communicated about discussing what’s next. How are we getting ready to survive, mitigate and adapt to the next extreme weather events? Should we rebuild or leave our devastated settlements? Are we ready for climate_immigration? It’s simply a pandora’s box filled with hard questions.
I was honored to contribute to World Green Building Council‘s Sustainable Reconstruction Framework, which – in addition to other reports and studies, I believe are meant to be tools to actively engage with our communities. They don’t offer the solutions but rather build the platform to prioritize and apply them.
As we communicate with PEOPLE, we can do better than implying “I told you so”.
I hope this post has sparked some interest and curiosity in you to explore the Sustainable Reconstruction Framework and other resources that can help us prepare for the future. Let’s use our voices and skills to build #resilience in our communities.
